Rising Sun 1 USL Rams 2
It was another good performance from the Rams who could have (and should have) won by more. Nonetheless, the result keeps the level of confidence high within the team and more importantly, maintains the Rams position firmly at the top of the Luton Sunday Football League.
Craig Savage returned from injury to take the number one shirt from Carlo Romano, who was unavailable for today’s game. Otherwise, it is the same team who defeated LA Rovers last weekend 4-2.
USL started the game on top and created many chances. Good passages of play led to Dean Bradley almost putting the Rams ahead after three minutes, however his shot went agonisingly wide. Following this, chances fell to Brendan Fay and Simon Ridgeway which led to the Sun’s keeper making a few saves.
Rams were certainly controlling the game. The only thing that they hadn’t done in the game up until this point was score! So you can imagine the disappointment when they fell behind to Rising Sun’s first shot on target. Following a Suns goal kick, the ball was picked up by one of their players who ran about 30 yards before coolly slotting the ball past a helpless Savage.
This rattled USL for a little while after. The free flowing football which had preceded the goal had been replaced by nervy defending and silly mistakes. The only thing that could stop the rut was an equaliser and thankfully this came soon after from Jairan Santana, following a decent move from the Rams. The ball was played up the field by Charlie Betts which was controlled superbly by Simon Ridgeway. He then played the through ball to Santana who drove the ball past the Suns keeper into the far corner.
This re-ignited the Rams and soon after they went ahead. Dean Bradley converted from the right hand side following a nice through ball from Terry Taverner to get his first goal of the season. Following further chances by Simon and Terry, the half time whistle went with Rams leading by two goals to one.
Rams started the second half just as brightly as the first, with more chances being created from all areas of the team. One particular chance was started by Brendan Fay, who sent the ball out wide to Dean. He then carried the ball down the line and passed the ball to Terry who drove the ball across the box only for Simon to agonisingly miss the ball.
A few minutes later however, Rams wrapped up the game. Terry picked up the ball from the midfield and following a brief run, he played the ball through to Simon who slotted away USL’s third goal.
After this, Rising Sun went into decline. USL were not only dominating possession and passage of play but they were also creating more chances. The centre back duo of Sean Maloney and Charlie Betts could have got a goal a piece, as well as Brendan Fay, who was unlucky with his long range effort. Dean and Aaron Bradley were linking up well on the right hand side of the pitch and on one occasion set up Kieran Fay, who should have scored. It seemed that a fourth goal was simply not meant to be.
Despite not converting as many chances as what was presented to them, the Rams can take heart that it was a great performance overall and can now go into next weeks County Cup game with London Luton full of belief that they can start that competition as well as they have in this one.
