Luton on Sunday is an unusual beast: a Sunday freesheet tabloid newspaper. It’s distributed to homes in Luton, Dunstable and the surrounding area in southern Bedfordshire.

It’s published by LSN Media Ltd, a branch of Cambridge-based Iliffe News & Media. Originally it was part of a two-title series together with Dunstable on Sunday; both shared a website. Both were in turn part of a wider group covering northern Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, including Bedfordshire on Sunday, the MK News (for Milton Keynes) and the Leighton Buzzard News.

luton on sunday

It merged with Dunstable on Sunday in August 2008 as Luton & Dunstable on Sunday, before being relaunched as the Luton & Dunstable Express and shifting to Wednesday publication on New Year’s Eve 2008. It was revived in August 2010 in response to demand from readers and advertisers in the area. The Luton & Dunstable Express (with which it shares a website) continues in existence. There’s an e-edition available free on the website.

Sunday league football is a term used in the United Kingdom to describe those association football leagues which play on Sunday, as opposed to the more usual Saturday. These leagues tend to be lower standard amateur competitions, whose players may have less ability, or less time to devote to football, but play purely for the love of the game. The term pub league can also be used, due to the number of public houses that enter teams.

Sunday leagues are sanctioned by the local County Football Association. There is no organised promotion or relegation between leagues, unlike in the National League System, which covers the top few levels of amateur football, although many leagues operate several divisions with promotion and relegation between them. However, ambitious Sunday teams may apply to join a Saturday league for a higher standard of football, and from there graduate to the FA-sanctioned leagues.

The FA Sunday Cup is a national knock-out competition for English Sunday league football teams administered by the FA. It was first staged in 1964.

Sunday League Football

The most prominent single location for Sunday league football is Hackney Marshes in east London.

Sunday leagues also exist in Scotland, where they make use of local council-owned pitches and facilities for nominal fees and are known as Sunday amateur football, mostly coming away from the perception of “pub leagues”.

Women’s football and futsal are usually played on Sunday, but it is not considered Sunday league football.

HATTERS hero Mick Harford and Arsenal legend Ian Wright are throwing their weight behind this year’s Karen Trust charity fun run, which takes place later this month.

The Karen Trust was set up in 2009 in memory of Karen Singh who died from a brain tumour. The charity supports families that are dealing with terminal cancer and has worked with both the Luton & Dunstable Hospital’s cancer unit and Keech Hospice Care.

Karen’s brother

Now in its third year, the charity event returns to Wardown Park on November 27. Karen’s brother, Joe, said: “Like so many other people, Karen was taken from us far too soon and the charity gives us the opportunity to keep her memory alive by supporting families that are dealing with terminal cancer.

“Our mission is to raise money to build a retreat for cancer sufferers to enjoy a holiday with their loved ones and spend some quality time together, and hopefully create some important precious memories.” The race starts at 10.30am and entry costs £10 for adults with under 16s free.

HOLIDAY-MAKERS will be able to enjoy the benefits of Monarch Airline’s ‘Italian Job’ when a new route from Luton to Rome is launched in March.

The new route is part of Monarch’s significant expansion into the Mediterranean during summer 2012.

From March 2012, Monarch will operate three flights a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays from Luton to the Italian capital.

Monarch will operate three flights a week to the Italian capital.

Managing director of Monarch, Kevin George said: “The strategy for Monarch Airlines is now firmly focused on its scheduled operations and we are delighted to be adding Rome to our already extensive network of leisure destinations across Europe from London Luton.

“Italy has been much requested by our customers over the past few years and it is great that we are now able to start our expansion into this beautiful country from our home base at Luton.”

Monarch’s plans also include expanding its network to 14 routes to Italy, Coratia and Greece, with two additional Airbus A320 aircraft being added to Monarch’s fleet from May 2012.

Simon Harley, Luton Airport’s business development manager said: “We are delighted with Monarch’s exciting announcement to start this new scheduled service to Rome. It is a welcome addition to the expanding route network at London Luton and will no doubt be a firm favourite with passengers. Rome is a must-see city and a great getaway to the delights of Italy.”

The silence was followed by the recital of the Kohima epitaph by Don Woodcroft, president of the Luton branch of the Royal British Legion, to remember commonwealth forces. Wreaths were laid on the memorial in memory of those who lost their lives, before prayers were read.

IT WAS a poignant family affair when Luton businessman Jon Cherry, 29, and three of his four sisters completed the Great South Run in Portsmouth in memory of their much-loved mum Valerie.

The former Great Ormond Street nurse, who brought them up single-handed, died of motor neurone disease in May only three months after being diagnosed.

The Cherry family who raised more than 4,500 running a marathon

The quartet raised more than £4,500 which they hope will be used to provide customised wheelchairs for other sufferers.

Jon, who lives in Wardown Park and works for insurance broker Willis, said: “Mum was diagnosed with frontal temporal disorder – a protein imbalance in the brain – about five years ago.

“But anyone outside the family wouldn’t have known she was ill.” In November she was transferred to the Royal Free after a couple of falls left her with no sensation in her legs.

“Never in a million years did we think it would be MND,” Jon said.

“Even though we were all by her bedside when she died, it was a pretty brutal time.”

Red Star racked up their 3rd straight win and went top of the league with a 6-2 win over Lea Sports PSG Reserves. Both sides won their respective leagues last year and had started the season unbeaten. The first half was fairly quiet with both sides stifling one another’s attacks. Red Star created some good chances but failed to test the keeper. Lea Sports had the chance to go 1-0 up when their striker used his hand to knock the ball past David Mitchell but Dean Ashton made a good save to keep it 0-0. Red Star continued to attack and were rewarded on the stroke of half-time.

Luke Potter, who picked up a pass from Mitchell, took the ball on before unleashing an unstoppable 30 yard piledriver into the top right hand corner. The PSG keeper could only watch as the ball flew past him to give Red Star a 1-0 half time lead
The Reds started the 2nd half brighter and with the impetus from the first goal continued to attack. On 50 minutes Red Star won a corner which Lea Sports headed clear. Unfortunately for them it fell to Amar Daved, on the edge of the box, who hit an exquisite volley past the keeper into the top left hand corner to double the lead. Red Star then added a 3rd 5 minutes later. A fluid quick counter attack saw Amar Daved slip in Junior George, who used the outside of his boot to calmly place the ball past the oncoming keeper to grab his first Red Star goal. Junior then turned provider on 65 minutes when his pinpoint cross from the right hand side found Potter unmarked at the back post to head home. Lea Sports continued to attack and fought hard to get back in the game, only a mix of good defending and a few saves kept them at bay. They pulled one back on 75 minutes when a cruel bounce deceived Danny Rowlatt and the Lea Sports striker hit a great half volley into the bottom right hand corner.

The 4 goal cushion was re-opened 5 minutes later when Amar Daved’s corner was met by David Mitchell, who powered through two defenders to head home. Lea Sports then pulled back another when Ashton misjudged the bounce of cross and the ball was tapped in by the Lea Sports substitute. Red Star had the final say with a fantastic team goal. Red Star put together 20 passes from the back all the way through midfield before Matt Brunton fed in Potter who could of shot for his hat-trick but unselfishly pulled the ball back for Amar Daved to grab his second and make the score 6-2

Manager Ashton said ” It was another good performance, improving the good work that we’ve put in during the first two games. We had a couple of players missing but the players who stepped in did really well and have given me some selection headaches. Some of the performances today were really good with Junior, Luke and Martin Richards leading the attack superbly and the midfield trio of Amar, Matt and Ricky Howe really controlled the tempo of the game and played some great passes which kept the attackers happy. We still need to iron out some silly mistakes from our game but overall we seem to be playing well. Lea Sports were a good side and will cause sides trouble so to get a good win early in the season should set the standards that we want to achieve”
